Being a solo provider is not something most people plan for. It is something you step into: by choice, by circumstance, or by the quiet knowing that the alternative would cost you more than you are willing to pay.
I have been doing it for years. And here is what I have actually learned: not the version that sounds empowering on social media, but the real version.
Safety is something you create, not something you wait for. This was perhaps the hardest thing to internalise. For a long time I was waiting: for the right situation, the right support structure, the right moment when it would feel secure enough to fully commit to the life I wanted. That moment does not come from the outside. You build it from the inside.
There is no outside hero holding you. I have had to become that hero myself: from the inside out. And strangely, that has made me more powerful than I ever expected to feel.
My energy matters more than my effort. Pushing harder does not create stability. Being resourced, grounded, and honest does. This took me a long time to learn, because the world teaches solo providers to just work harder. But burnout does not come from doing too much: it comes from doing things that drain rather than fuel you.
I have also had to redefine what support means. It does not always look like family nearby or predictable systems. Sometimes it is chosen, created, and internal. My support network is not the one I was born into. It is the one I built.
I trust myself more because I have had to. There is no “system” or government that will have my back, and strangely, that has made me more powerful. When you stop outsourcing your security to external structures, you discover a depth of self-trust you did not know was available to you.
Freedom and confidence come together. You cannot have one without the other. And the freedom of this life: even with its uncertainty, even without guarantees: is something I re-choose every single day.
My son does not need a perfect life. He needs a present mother. And I have learned that choosing myself, choosing this unconventional path, is what allows me to actually be here for him: not burned out, not resentful, not performing a life that does not fit. Actually present.
