When people start exploring Human Design, they usually discover their Energy Type first. Then their Authority. And then they hit the concept of Definition, and things get interesting.
Your human design definition is one of the most practically useful things to understand: especially in relationships. It explains why your energy feels consistent or changeable.
Human design profiles and definitions work together to tell you something essential: how consistent your energy is, how you naturally connect with other people, and what you actually need from your relationships to feel whole and functioning.
Your Definition refers to which centers in your Bodygraph are consistently active and how they connect to each other. There are four possible Definitions: Single Definition (~41%), Split Definition (~46%), Triple Split (~11%), and Quadruple Split (very rare).
All your defined centers connect in one continuous circuit. As a result, your energy is consistent, self-contained, and does not rely on other people to complete it. You can work alone, make decisions independently, and function well in solitude. In relationships, you do not need your partner to “complete” you energetically. What you need is someone who respects your rhythm.
Your defined centers form two separate groups with a gap between them, and other people and environments bridge that gap. You feel more whole and clear-headed with certain people whose definition bridges your split. This is not dependence; it is simply how you function. The goal is to understand why certain people feel so compelling, so you can choose consciously rather than by energy alone.
Three separate circuits means you need a variety of people and environments to bridge your different splits: no single person will do it all. Social environments and multiple connections energize Triple Split people. In fact, their completeness comes from a community, not from a single perfect person.
Your Definition affects your decision-making (Split Definitions often benefit from talking through decisions or moving through different environments), your work (Single Definitions work effectively alone; Splits and Triple Splits do their best thinking in collaboration), and your relationships with children (if your child’s Definition differs from yours, you may have very different needs around alone time and social input).
