People have probably said it to you more than once. That you’re too critical. Too rigid. That you turn everything into a debate. And you’ve stood there thinking: I’m not trying to argue. I’m trying to understand what’s actually right here. This is the Enneagram Type 1 at their most misread. This is the Enneagram Type 1 at their most misread.
But somehow the wanting to understand lands as picking a fight. And that confusion has probably followed you for a long time.
All I want is to understand. And somehow that always sounds like I’m picking a fight.
There’s a reason for that specific to the Enneagram Type 1. And it’s not what you think. Let me show you.
You walk into a room and immediately notice what’s off. The system that doesn’t work. The process that doesn’t make sense. The thing everyone else just accepts without asking why. And you can’t let it go, because you genuinely need to understand what’s right here.
You hold yourself to incredibly high standards. Probably hold others to them too, even when you try not to. You’re principled. People trust you to do the right thing, and you always do.
But sometimes it’s exhausting. The inner critic never fully switches off. And no matter how much you do, it never quite feels like enough. And no matter how carefully you raise something, it lands as criticism. You’re trying to build something better. They hear you saying something’s wrong with them.
Your Soul Desire is a world rooted in justice, honesty, and fairness. You can see that world so clearly. It’s why you care so much.
But standing between you and that world is your Existential Fear: being corrupt, wrong, or morally flawed yourself.
This is not just “I don’t want to make a mistake.” It’s deeper. It’s the terror that at your core, you might be the very thing you’re fighting against. That you might be unjust. Biased. Flawed in ways you can’t see.
And because that fear is quietly running in the background, your Superpower, your extraordinary ability to see what’s fair and needed, starts to work against you.
When fear takes over, you stop trying to understand and start correcting. You enforce the standard before the room is ready. You push before trust is there. You’re still asking the right question. But you’re asking it in a way that closes people down instead of opening them up. And what was meant to find the truth ends up starting an argument.
This is the Misused Superpower. Not a character flaw. Your gift running on fear instead of wisdom.
The shift doesn’t come from lowering your standards. It never will.
It comes from learning to trust a process you can’t fully control.
Your Superpower is real. You do see what’s fair and needed. But the world also needs you to build alongside others. Not ahead of them.
What changes everything is learning to hold your standard while staying open to how things actually become. The question you’ve always been asking, what’s actually right here, is the right question. You just have to learn to ask it in a way people can hear.
The co-creation you’ve been avoiding, because it’s messy and slow and not quite right yet, is the exact thing that makes what you build last. You don’t need to stop caring. You need to start trusting that the process is not the same as the problem.
When an Enneagram Type 1 moves into their Wisdom, they stop being the person who enforces the standard and become the person who embodies it.
People stop feeling judged around you and start feeling held. They bring you their real mess, not the polished version, because they know you’ll help them find what’s actually right, not just what’s technically correct.
Your integrity stops being a wall and starts being a compass. And the confusion you’ve been carrying, why does everyone think I’m picking a fight when I’m just trying to understand, finally dissolves. Because the people around you start feeling what you’re actually doing. And they help you do it.
If this resonated, you might recognise someone close to you in one of the other types: Enneagram Type 2, Enneagram Type 3, Enneagram Type 4. Or read more about what the Enneagram of Personality is and how it works.
This session should cost over 100€. I’m confident enough in what we can do together in 60 minutes that I’d stake that on it.
But you don’t know me yet. And the coaching world has made it hard to know who to trust.
So here’s my offer: 30€. One session. Let me show you what the Enneagram actually does when it’s used properly. If it doesn’t shift something real for you, then you lost 30€ and a lunch. If it does, and I believe it will, you’ll know exactly what to do next.
Dare to take my hand?
