They told you to soften. To be less. To stop taking up so much space. And something in you refused. Not because you were trying to dominate. But because someone had to make sure things didn’t fall apart.
And yet somehow the people you protect end up afraid of you. Or they leave. And you’re left asking the same question you’ve probably been sitting with for a long time.
Why does everyone pull away when all I’m doing is trying to make sure they’re okay?
No one has answered that properly. Let me try. This is one of the most misunderstood patterns in the Enneagram Type 8.
You move fast and you act decisively. You see what needs to happen and you make it happen. You don’t wait for permission when the situation requires action.
You protect the people you care about fiercely. You’ll confront injustice directly, even when everyone else looks the other way.
But you’ve also felt the cost of this. The relationships that couldn’t hold the intensity. The moments where your directness wounded someone when that was the last thing you intended. The exhaustion of always being the strongest in the room. And the quiet confusion underneath: I’m not trying to hurt anyone. I’m trying to keep everyone safe. Why does it keep landing wrong?
Your Soul Desire is a world of collective stability, where power protects and lifts people up, where no one is left vulnerable, where strength is in service of everyone, not just the strong.
Your Existential Fear is losing control. Losing power. Facing violation. Having to stand by passively while something important collapses.
So your Superpower, the ability to see what needs to be done and do it, starts running on that fear.
When it does, you stop leading in order to protect and start controlling in order to avoid the feeling of being out of control. You get ahead of every threat before it materialises. You manage the situation so tightly that no one can get close enough to hurt you. You project strength so completely that vulnerability, yours or anyone else’s, starts to feel like a liability.
This is the Misused Superpower. Not cruelty. Not the desire to dominate. Your fierce protective instinct trying to make the world safe by controlling it.
And the painful part: the more tightly you hold, the more people feel managed instead of protected. So they pull away. Not because they don’t see your strength. Because they can’t find you inside it.
The shift doesn’t come from becoming softer or smaller. That’s not what this is about.
It comes from learning that real strength, the kind that actually protects, requires vulnerability. Not weakness. Not giving power away. But letting people in far enough to actually feel safe, instead of just managed.
Your Wisdom is using your strength in service of others without needing to control them to do it. Letting the people you care about be real with you, even when real means messy. Trusting that your power doesn’t disappear the moment you let your guard down.
When you lead with your heart as well as your strength, you become something far more powerful than someone people fear. You become someone people actually follow.
When an Enneagram Type 8 moves into their Wisdom, they stop being the person who holds everything together by force and become the person who holds everything together by presence.
The stability you create is no longer dependent on you controlling every variable. It comes from the fact that people trust you. Not because they have to. Because they want to.
And the question you’ve been carrying for years, why does everyone leave when all I’m doing is keeping them safe, finally gets answered. Because now they can feel the care underneath the strength. And they stay.
If this resonated, you might recognise someone close to you in one of the other types: Enneagram Type 1, Enneagram Type 2, Enneagram Type 3. Or read more about what the Enneagram of Personality is and how it works.
This session should cost over 100€. I’m confident enough in what we can do together in 60 minutes that I’d stake that on it.
But you don’t know me yet. And the coaching world has made it hard to know who to trust.
So here’s my offer: 30€. One session. Let me show you what the Enneagram actually does when it’s used properly. If it doesn’t shift something real for you, then you lost 30€ and a lunch. If it does, and I believe it will, you’ll know exactly what to do next.
Dare to take my hand?
