From the outside, it might look like I have broken free. A new country, a different way of living, decisions that most people would not dare to make. And in many ways, I have moved. But that does not mean my patterns broke.
I still feel the pull to doubt. Sometimes I catch myself looking for permission. And at the edge of a big decision, that old familiar wave of “what if you’re wrong?” still shows up.
This is the thing no one tells you about transformation: changing your external life does not automatically change your internal patterns. You can move countries, leave relationships, start over, and still bring the same fears, the same self-doubt, the same unconscious ways of seeing yourself with you.
The shift is not in what you choose on the outside. It is in how you start to see what is happening on the inside.
When I stopped asking “what is wrong with my life?” and started asking “what pattern is running right now?” everything became clearer. Not easier: clearer. There is a difference.
Patterns are not personality flaws. They are not proof that you are broken or beyond help. They are responses that once made sense: often formed in childhood or in past experiences where certain behaviours helped you survive or belong.
The pattern that tells you to stay small was protecting you once. The one that makes you overthink was keeping you safe once. The one that pulls you toward people-pleasing was earning you love once.
When you see that, you stop fighting yourself. You start getting curious instead.
You are not stuck because something is wrong with you. You are stuck because you are running a programme that you never updated. And that programme can be updated: not through sheer willpower or a dramatic life change, but through honest, consistent inner work.
The most powerful thing I have found? Coming back to this reminder regularly. Not once, when you read an inspiring post. But every week, when life gets noisy and the old patterns start pulling again. That steady, gentle recalibration is what actually creates change.
If you want to understand yourself more deeply and start seeing the patterns beneath your decisions, Beyond Your Type: The Enneagram is a good place to begin. It is available as a free PDF download or as a printed version for less than 10 euros on Amazon.
